Part of the prestigious St. Johns development in Central Manchester, was formerly the location of Granada TV Studios and overlooks the cobbles of the former Coronation Street set where the facade of the legendary Rovers Return can still be seen by the turnstile at the entrance to the site. The Old Granada Studios project has been delivered by B&K with the roofing installation carried out by approved contractors S1 Roofing. The project features a full MOY Specification comprising Paro-melt Hot Melt Liquids on the main roof at level ten and the level eleven stair core.

Challenges

There were several challenges for the installation itself with the client deciding mid-project that the main roof on level ten would be used as a terrace area for the building occupants. This resulted in installing a glass fence around the perimeter fixed through the deck after the original installation of the MOY Paromelt system had been completed. The newly installed balustrade supports posed a challenge to the installation as a pitch pocket detail usually used to weather such details was impractical due to the thickness of the installation and the new requirement to install a pedestal-supported, paved terrace.

Solution

It was decided that the detailing work would be carried out using MOY Enkopur Cold Applied Liquid Waterproofing, this would enable the insulation to remain at a suitable thickness to both support the paving slabs of the terrace above and achieve the specified U-Value. On the level 9 balcony, the originally specified Bitumen warm roof system was swapped out for a MOY Enkopur Cold Applied Liquid warm roof system, this happened at the request of the main contractor to facilitate the installation of the curtain wall and expedite the weather tightness of the building. The MOY Enkopur was installed to the thresholds and below in the first instance, along with the perimeter kerbs on the outside edge, this allowed the other trades to complete their works in the area with the risk of damage to the waterproofing. The remainder of the waterproofing works were carried out at a later date, linking up with the previously installed sections to provide a fully weathered solution.
